Familiarity breeds success -- sometimes. Audiences may have thought Blue Streak was something Martin Lawrence had already starred in, but that didn't stop the cop comedy from collaring $19.2 million. Though it couldn't hit the heights of Lawrence's Life, which landed $20.4 million, Streak outran Nothing to Lose's $11.6 million and Bad Boys' $15.5 million. As for the No. 2 debut, perhaps the public criticism Kevin Costner tossed at For Love of the Game hurt the diamond-set romance's chances of even matching the $18.9 million set by his Message in a Bottle. (His pinstriped predecessors, Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, became hits after limited release their first times at bat.) Bubbling under the top 10, American Beauty boasted an astounding per-screen average; the film will likely expand to around 1,000 theaters by Oct. 1.
