Owen Gleiberman is a film critic for EW
Director David O. Russell uses the aftershocks of the Persian Gulf War as an excuse to stage a series of hyper and disorienting action jolts. George Clooney, as the cynical/noble Humphrey Bogart figure, leads a trio of American soldiers (Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze) in a plan to take a stash of Kuwaiti gold bullion that has been stolen by Saddam Hussein's thugs. The movie is a classically structured mercenary adventure story, only it's shot and paced with the jacked-up frenzy of an existential war-is-hell epic. The mood of jangled anxiety verges, at moments, on true moral terror yet never quite makes it there. B
