Goodbye Lover (1999)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Rated: R; Genres: Comedy, Mystery and Thriller; With: Patricia Arquette, Ellen DeGeneres, Don Johnson and Dermot Mulroney

Yes, it's yet another movie about a Sound of Music-obsessed real-estate agent (Arquette) cheating on her alcoholic PR-exec husband (Mulroney) with his church-organist brother (Don Johnson!). When it appears one of the sibs might have been pushed over a ledge, a misanthropic cop (Ellen DeGeneres!) is called in to investigate. But the real mystery here is: What the hell is this movie? A comedy? A thriller? A searing indictment of premillennial American culture? The filmmakers sure didn't know.
REEL GOODIES (1:03) As a hitman hired to make a contract job look like a serial killing, extra-sleazy Buffalo 66 auteur Vincent Gallo works over a hog-tied hostage with a baseball bat.
THE LAST DETAIL Oh, how the mighty have fallen: Lover director Roland Joffe, who was nominated for two Oscars (for The Killing Fields and The Mission), now executive-produces MTV's dirty-minded soap, Undressed.
