Movie Review

julien donkey-boy (1999)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Rated: R; Genre: Drama; With: Ewen Bremner and Chloë Sevigny

With the first American film to earn the Dogma 95 seal of approval, writer-director Harmony Korine has made an exciting artistic leap over the slummy junk of Gummo. He remains smitten with sordidness — here it involves a schizophrenic young man (Ewen Bremner) and his misbegotten family. But Korine has found ways to convey emotional terrain that should serve him well, even after he outgrows shock as an artistic goal. B+
