David Byrne recently denounced the term world beat, but it perfectly describes Zap Mama's fourth album (on Byrne's label). There's plenty of world here, from Belgium, Philadelphia, Cameroon, and other far-flung spots. And plenty of beat: hip-hop, drum-and-bass, and contemporary R&B. Most important, there's a strong central voice -- main Mama Marie Daulne -- anchoring a rare album that's both global and personal. B+
