Nightlife (1999)

Details Lead Performance: Pet Shop Boys

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe serve sumptuous techno-pop ditties as if they were flutes full of decadent absinthe. And they do so with grace, poise, and cabaret camp. Lowe's cheeky synths simmer, then boil, while Tennant drones dignified and cynical, peaking on a melancholy duet with Kylie Minogue (''In Denial''). One classy new twist: The band develops morals here, gradually pushing aside the absinthe. You can't be a fop forever.
