Chris Smith's uneasily amusing documentary about Mark Borchardt, a skinny, unworldly 32-year-old Wisconsinite on his roundabout quest to make an indie horror movie. Borchardt's unironic intensity in the face of money problems, family problems, and across-the-board screwups is touching, but Smith's poker-faced dispassion about his subject's vulnerably antic lifestyle turns a real, unpolished person, along with his family and friends, into colorful movie characters.
