A sense of abandonment is missing from this vanilla adaptation of Mona Simpson's novel about an irrepressible single mother (Susan Sarandon) who could stand a little tamping down, and her overly mature teenage daughter (self-possessed Natalie Portman) who could stand a little lightening up. Sarandon acts larger than life, but her exciting brassiness is muted by the film's neutralizing ''fairness.'' C+
