Filmmaker Atom Egoyan pokes into his favorite pits of sexual darkness, spiritual hunger, and human disconnectedness in the story of a naive Irish girl (Elaine Cassidy) who crosses fatefully into the insular world of a tidy English catering manager (Bob Hoskins) with an insidiously warped interest in ''rescuing'' young women. In between scenes heaped with almost too much fancifully evoked dread, Egoyan creates striking, signature moments of inner desolation and veiled evil. B+
