Though the title sounds like a Tolstoy novel and the liner notes quote Greek poet Agathon, Simply Red's highbrow pretense amounts to precious little. Lowbrow beats and Milquetoast melodies distract from Mick Hucknall's luxurious voice. Only when the band drops the Euro-dance pose and indulges in mellow soul maneuvers does the frosty reserve thaw. C
