WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer (1999, Fox, 120 mins., PG-13, also on DVD) It's an odd Dream indeed when the creaky humor of weaver-turned-ass Bottom is the best thing about this movie. Kline turns in a bravura performance -- he's one of the few in this star-packed cast who actually knows what to do with Shakespeare's poetry. Calista Flockhart Ally-inates the lovelorn Helena with twitchy nervousness, while David Strathairn's Theseus is so glum it's difficult to believe he's in a film that turns on the shenanigans of a sprite named Puck. REEL GOODIES (0:45) Stanley Tucci's Puck squares off with a newfangled two-wheeled contraption. THE LAST DETAIL Director Michael Hoffman, who mounted the similarly ornate Restoration, also guided Pfeiffer through One Fine Day. B-
