Friendly Fire

The playing's the thing — particularly when you have two ripsnorting modern improvisers like tenor saxophonist/flautist Joe Lovano and alto saxophonist Greg Osby going head-to-head on a set of functional originals and well-chosen jazz standards (''Monk's Mood,'' ''Broadway Blues'') in Friendly Fire. But don't undervalue the all-ears rhythm section of pianist Jason Moran, bassist Cameron Brown, and drummer Idris Muhammad, whose terra firma support and hairpin responses allow the leaders to roam free and easy.
