WILD WILD WEST (107 mins., PG-13) A would-be blockbuster that figures out how to go thud more often than anything since Hudson Hawk. Once again, director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black) has made an overscaled theme park of a movie, only this one is straitjacketed by the overfamiliarity of its Old West setting. As James West, Will Smith acts so cool and invulnerable that he's in danger of becoming an automaton of attitude. There is one nifty special effect -- a giant mechanical tarantula that stalks Monument Valley. After a while, it starts to seem the very spirit of the modern blockbuster, a trash heap of eye candy tromping everything in its path. D+
