Shattered Image

EW's GRADE
C-

Details Rated: Unrated; Genres: Crime, Mystery, Suspense; With: William Baldwin, Anna Parillaud, Anne Parillaud and Raul Ruiz; Distributor: Lions Gate Films

If Hitchcock had decided to cross Gaslight with La Femme Nikita, he may have chosen a premise like this: Is Jessie (Parillaud) a rape victim now honeymooning with her handsome husband (Baldwin) in Jamaica, or is she a bewigged, black-clad assassin living in Seattle? Is he trying to kill her, or vice versa? Neither she nor we can figure out which scenario is her real life and which is her recurrent dream. And because Hitchcock, unfortunately, didn't make Shattered Image — blame, instead, Chilean-born director Raul Ruiz — this far-fetched puzzler isn't even all that clever. Yes, the stars' physical chemistry is combustible, but Baldwin and Parillaud deliver the outlandish dialogue in such monotones that even they don't seem to be having much fun. C-
