To Kill a Mockingbird goes to Vermont: In 1952, black minister Walter Andrews (Hudson, the steely warden from Oz) moves into a backwoods village with his adolescent son. At about the same time, a footloose young French Canadian woman comes to town. None of these newcomers are made to feel particularly welcome by the clannish boors living in Kingdom County so when the young Canuck's pregnant corpse is found, Andrews is naturally accused. Once native attorney Charlie Kinneson (Angela Lansbury's nephew) rallies to the cause, this slow-at-the-get-go courtroom drama makes a pretty convincing case. B-
