THE HAUNTING (118 mins., PG-13) Shirley Jackson's eerie 1959 ghost tale has been reduced to a silly horror flick afraid of its own audience; the scariest thing about it is how awful it is. Liam Neeson plays a doctor studying the nature of fear; Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Owen Wilson are the subjects who spend much of their time running through tricked-up hallways at a good pace, as befits the direction of Speed freak Jan De Bont. D
