Gray's a soulful changeling, bounding from gritty urban funk to polished R&B and tumescent Princely come-ons. And the L.A.-based singer shows how to use her versatile voice to project the album's ever-changing moods. But she's young yet, and On How Life Is seems a bit unfocused — like the sound of someone trying on different styles for size, and never quite settling on anything. B
