THE CONFESSION Alec Baldwin, Ben Kingsley (Sterling, 114 mins., R, also on DVD) Baldwin is your basic ambitious attorney who does whatever it takes to win, and Kingsley is his new client, who has killed the three people he blames for his son's death and wants to plead guilty to atone for his sins. The film tackles some heavy questions about law, justice, retribution, and redemption, but unfortunately, it wrestles so awkwardly with the unformed answers that it's rarely coherent, let alone compelling. And ''The Confession'' betrays its straight-to-cable origins with a silly, superfluous subplot that finds the lawyer and his client's wife (Amy Irving) falling into each other's arms. I mean, how many ethical issues can one attorney take?
