For whatever reason, this direct-to-video dud gives once-promising director Mulcahy (Highlander) the in-the-title billing usually reserved for dead authors and John Carpenter. A word to the wise: Turn Russell Mulcahy's Tale of the Mummy off right after the stylish, Indiana Jones-y period preface (featuring an incredibly magnetic Christopher Lee). That way you'll miss the rote modern-day police investigation, the slapdash romance-in-the-heat-of-peril, and the numerous attacks by something one can only describe as killer gauze. D+
