Fall Movie Preview

This summer's heat wave didn't always set movie screens on fire (The Haunting, anyone?), but fortunately a much cooler front is about to blow our way. This fall, theaters will be deluged with films from some of Hollywood's edgiest directors. Like Oliver Stone's football drama Any Given Sunday (with Al Pacino and Cameron Diaz), Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights follow-up Magnolia (with a cameo by Tom Cruise), and Milos Forman's Man on the Moon (that's Jim Carrey stretching as Taxi mechanic Andy Kaufman). For more on the long-range outlook -- including forecasts for Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow in The Talented Mr. Ripley and Tom Hanks in The Green Mile -- stay tuned for EW's Fall Movie Preview.

BUZZ-O-METER

Meet our amazingly scientific rating system. While it does not gauge the quality of the films, it does measure, on a scale of 1 to 10, the stuff buzz is made of: studio hype, controversy, advance word of mouth, and overall watercooler-worthiness.
