Strange, but compared with the pumped-up frat metal of Limp Bizkit and Korn, Filter seem, well, subtle. While they still crash and thrash through ''Sand,'' songs like ''Take a Picture'' find the Chicago-based quartet reaching for the yearning grandeur of Joshua Tree-era U2. Make no mistake, Filter are still derivative, but their attention to melody and craft is refreshing.
