Composer-arranger Mendoza is one of the finest musicians you haven't heard of, partly because he's always behind the scenes with a style that is lyrical, sophisticated, and witty. Epiphany is a gentle wonder, on which soloists like John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, and Michael Brecker play atop the London Symphony Orchestra's gorgeous structures. Echoes of Gil Evans and Claus Ogerman are in evidence; so is Mendoza's signature sound, one in which head and heart get along just fine. B+
