''Bride of Chucky'' flirts with the MTV Awards

The horror film throws its hat in the ring for Best Movie, taking out an ad in ''Variety''

It worked for Shakespeare in Love, didn't it? With the MTV Movie Awards coming up, Universal says, Let the campaigning begin! A full-page ''For Your Consideration'' ad — trumpeting, of all things, the studio's Bride of Chucky — ran in Variety April 5, 1999. While the treatment is tongue-in-cheek, the ad does ask voters to consider the film in such categories as Best Kiss and Best On-Screen Duo. ''We're not trying to be the Weinsteins of the MTV Awards,'' says Chucky producer David Kirschner, though he thinks the doll is undeniably a star of music-television ilk. ''He'd never be invited to a Vanity Fair party,'' says Kirschner, ''but he would be invited to an MTV party.''
