Fountain penned
Scream director and newly minted novelist Wes Craven will soon be able to combine his vocations: His first book, the sci-fi thriller Fountain Society (due from Simon & Schuster in the fall), has just been sold to Robert Zemeckis' production company at DreamWorks, with Craven set to direct. The payout could reach into the mid seven figures.
Case closed
In 1997 publisher Lyle Stuart lost a $3.1 million libel suit to Steve Wynn over catalog copy that called the casino mogul a ''front man for the Genovese family.'' But Wynn has dropped the suit he had filed over the actual book, Running Scared: The Life and Treacherous Times of Las Vegas Casino King Steve Wynn. ''They knew they were going to lose this case,'' insists Stuart. ''There doesn't seem to be any reason to litigate again,'' responds Wynn's attorney, Barry Langberg, noting that since Stuart has declared bankruptcy, there is nothing to be gained from another suit.
Whine festival
The newest book trend? Outspoken female stars who kvetch and advise with equal aplomb, tackling everything from butthead men to getting saggy. In March, TV queen Judge Judy published her memoir, Beauty Fades, Dumb Is Forever, and dishy diva Joan Rivers prattled through Don't Count the Candles: Just Keep the Fire Lit! In May, Hyperion releases The View gabster Joy Behar's sharp-tongued essay collection Joy Shtick. So what's with all the whining? ''I am never motivated by a trend,'' says Behar. ''I was, however, motivated by an advance.''
