Lyrically more mainstream than 1996's True to Myself, Eric Benét's latest nonetheless soars, thanks to his five-octave vocal sincerity and transcendent soul stylings. This savory homage to '70s soul is so unique it can't be contained in today's urban-music category. Producers like Ali Shaheed Muhammad and artists like Me'shell Ndegeocello, Tamia, and Roy Ayers add sizzle to Benet's now-seasoned chops in A Day in the Life. Well done. A
