''You've Got Mail'' packs on the extras

When it comes to DVDs, the lure may lie less with the engine and more with the accessories. Viewers of New Line's Pleasantville DVD get the screenplay and storyboards, and early buyers of MGM's Ronin DVD got a link to a live chat with director John Frankenheimer. But that's modest compared with Warner Home Video's You've Got Mail DVD, which could have been called Your Mailbox Is Full. Besides the usual extras, the disc, when dropped into a computer's DVD-ROM drive, links you to the You've Got Mail community page and enables you to build and host your own website using YGM photos, art, and logos, or customize your PC with screensavers, icons, and desktop patterns. There are scene-by-scene comparisons with the films that inspired YGM (The Shop Around the Corner and In the Good Old Summertime), and, like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's characters, you too may find Internet romance — in a YGM chat room. With all the frills, we have to wonder: What can we possibly expect on the DVD of The Matrix?
