Wynton Marsalis' approach to Thelonious Monk is that of a detached but admiring classicist unable to get to the core of Monk's brilliance. Still, the latest in Marsalis' Standard Time series, Marsalis Plays Monk Standard Time, Vol. IV is an illuminating interpretation, with its rollicking midsize ensemble arrangements and a thinking person's party vibe. Lesser-known Monk jewels like ''Brake's Sake'' and ''Green Chimneys'' add to the distinction of this project, a prize in the ranks of Monk tributes. B+
