Wynton Marsalis' approach to Thelonious Monk is that of a detached but admiring classicist unable to get to the core of Monk's brilliance. Still, the latest in Marsalis' Standard Time series, Marsalis Plays Monk — Standard Time, Vol. IV is an illuminating interpretation, with its rollicking midsize ensemble arrangements and a thinking person's party vibe. Lesser-known Monk jewels like ''Brake's Sake'' and ''Green Chimneys'' add to the distinction of this project, a prize in the ranks of Monk tributes. B+
