Many religions have resurrection myths: in Dylanology, the day he caused a near-riot at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival; and in Ellingtonia, the day he caused a near-riot at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival. What makes Newport the Galilee of American music, besides all the sand? In Ellington's case, dizzying jazz, from the swinging orchestral suite composed for the festival to saxophonist Paul Gonsalvas' 27-chorus improvisation in ''Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue.''
