One snowy day in the depressed Midwest, Paxton's family man, Thornton's sweet half-wit, and Brent Briscoe's loudmouthed glutton find $4.4 million in a wrecked plane, then fearfully struggle over what to do with it. Once director Sam Raimi and writer Scott B. Smith have assembled their pressure cooker in the opening acts of A Simple Plan, they serve pop thrills par excellence. The little lives of these characters steadily unravel as the need, hope, and dread in their guts knot up into big balls of greed. Costarring Fonda as Paxton's wife, a Lady Macbeth with bangs and a baby. B+
