Brilliance can be jarring in an otherwise ill-conceived movie, but not when it's from a deft comic like Garofalo in Sweethearts. She has a tenacious wit as an urbane psychotic who holds her blind date at gunpoint rather than be alone on the night before she plans to commit suicide a role she turned down Scream to do. Her talent almost makes up for first-time director Aleks Horvat's missteps in straying from the setup and Rouse's unconvincing portrayal of the victim. C+
