Mucho macho. In Anthony Drazan's screen adaptation of David Rabe's stage play, Penn and Spacey are Hollywood casting agents who share chicks, a bachelor pad, and a lot of cocaine. Their torrential volleys of smack talk and philosophical speculation dramatize battles lost and won over the male soul. If you can stomach its thematic heavy-handedness and shrill misanthropy, Hurlyburly is at least an ace chance to see Penn and Spacey at their Methodological best and to see Meg Ryan as a poignant, yummy good-time girl actually act.
