It's possible I couldn't comprehend The Avengers simply because it kept lulling me to sleep, but a sentient viewing confirmed that the film version of the '60s spy series is 90 minutes of mild nonsense. Uma Thurman is the kinkily clad Emma Peel, Ralph Fiennes the spruce John Steed, and Sean Connery the kilted baddie planning to kidnap the weather. Together, the actors succeed in maintaining professional dignity. C-
