VARSITY BLUES (100 mins., R) A conventionally plotted sports melodrama, but brisk and smarter than you expect. James Van Der Beek gets to show some swagger as Mox, a Texas high school quarterback who's a great athlete but not quite a jock. When the first-stringer is sidelined by an injury, Mox becomes a star. There are some flashy gridiron showdowns (most of them scored to jackhammer alternative metal), as well as some winky bits of adolescent sex play. But the film also creates a pungent portrait of a small-town community in the grip of an obsession. B
