Master of the guitar, banjo, and lute-like oud, Bull was a world-music eclectic decades before it was fashionable. Though not in their league technically, he anticipated fret masters as diverse as Gabor Szabo, John McLaughlin, and Ry Cooder. Vanguard has collected his best early work on one CD, whose highlights are ''Blend,'' a hypnotic duet with jazz drummer Billy Higgins, and ''Gospel Tune,'' a beautifully stark reimagining of Ray Charles' ''I Got a Woman.''
