Save Our Children (1999)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Release Date: Feb 02, 1999; Lead Performance: Pharoah Sanders; Genre: Jazz

Pharoah Sanders still achieves the mesmerizing African and Eastern-influenced polyrhythms that marked his work with the ever-experimenting John Coltrane. On Save Our Children, his pilgrimage through the Afro-Asiatic jazz diaspora resonates on songs like ''The Ancient Song'' and ''Kazuko,'' on which he shapes a pastiche of haunting harmonies and tones behind his trademark sax screams. The title track is saddled with a clumsy Arabic rap, but it represents, like the album itself, his exploratory genius. B
