The solo debut of Los Lobos' goateed frontman is a straight-ahead album of pulsing MexiCali blues and border soul. Cesar Rosas strips away the ambient Mitch Froom-produced ornamentation of the last two Lobos records and returns to a simpler roots-rock style. While Soul Disguise lacks the adventuresome experimentation of competing Los Lobos side project the Latin Playboys, it proves there's still life left in three rousing chords and an accordion. B
