PAYBACK (102 mins., R) Mel Gibson sports a new look, and it isn't pretty. His stoic homicidal stare is set off by a hairline that appears to be creeping down his forehead. Gibson plays Porter, a professional thief whose junkie wife and former partner left him for dead, making off with the cash they were supposed to divide up. But Porter survived, and now he's returned to exact vengeance. No one will give him the $70,000 he says he's owed, and in a strange way, that's part of Porter's plan: It's his excuse to threaten, maim, and kill everyone in his path. Payback is a thriller so mean and degraded it carries a low-down, vicious charge. Sadism is its only real subject, and its only real life as well. B-
