Snake Eyes (1999)

EW's GRADE
D

Details Release Date: Feb 16, 1999; Movie Rated: R; Genre: Mystery and Thriller; With: Nicolas Cage, Carla Gugino and Gary Sinise; Distributor: Paramount Pictures

Understatement is a foreign concept to Brian De Palma. With Snake Eyes, the frenetic filmmaker turns a serviceable plot — about a crooked Atlantic City cop (Cage), his naval-hero best friend (Sinise), and a political assassination — into a garish muddle. Of course, David Koepp's melodramatic script deserves some blame. Cage, meanwhile, recites his lines with that bug-eyed rigor he sometimes mistakes for intensity. Fans of double-cross thrillers will yearn for the graceful restraint of De Palma's idol, Hitchcock, and the nuanced paranoia of Jimmy Stewart. In this director's hands, well...no dice. D
