Her album's title notwithstanding, what this gifted singer-songwriter certainly did not deserve was the overproduced dross that marked her previous three efforts with MCA Nashville: Buried under all the molasses was a clear-as-moonshine voice that suggested both experience and discovery. Fortunately, Willis is far better served on What I Deserve, artfully melding the sturm und twang of her country upbringing with the plaintive grit of roots rock and throwing in, for good measure, cuts by Paul Westerberg and Nick Drake. A
