Lead Performance: Julian Lennon

If anyone other than a Lennon released Photograph Smile, it would be hailed as a triumph of elegantly baroque pop. Sure, the Beatles influence is unmistakable (''Way to Your Heart'' is basically a rewrite of ''Lucy in the Sky''), but Smile is a heartfelt, expertly crafted collection. With this album, Lennon comes up from the rear in the rock-progeny credibility race, streaks past Adam Cohen and Chynna Phillips, and is fast gaining on Jakob Dylan.
