Stiller plays serious in this real-life story of former TV writer Jerry Stahl's heroin-fueled self-destruction. Though full of scenes of outrageous indulgence, the film picks up Stahl's trajectory too late in the game: When he arrives in L.A., he's already halfway down the sewer. And as Stiller plays him, he's too self-loathing to garner sympathy. That may be the point, but the result is still underwhelming. C+
