Now that Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful is up for seven Oscars, it should come as no surprise that Hollywood is preparing to remake one of the writer-director-star's previous Italian comedies, 1994's Il Mostro (The Monster). ''Benigni is the most gifted physical comedian of his generation,'' says the remake's screenwriter Dan Rosen. ''And the fact that he's getting all this attention doesn't hurt.'' Despite the flattery through imitation, Benigni has no plans to reprise his role, a jack-of-all-trades suspected of being a serial killer. ''I did the original,'' he says. ''That's enough for me.''
