After poachers encroach on his African habitat, an oversize primate and his lifelong friend (Theron) take refuge in a California animal conservancy. But is L.A. ready for a 2,000-pound gorilla (other than Harvey Weinstein)? Of course not: The city is laid waste when the overwhelmed simian, predictably, goes ape. Don't expect dramatic excellence in Mighty Joe Young, but Theron is remarkably comfortable with her monkey costar, and the special effects are state-of-the-art. Kids will squeal with delight; adults are more likely to squirm with boredom. C
