Everyone has his own idea of the day the music died, making Don McLean's encoded old hit ripe for reinterpretation by every generation. Madonna offers an appropriately mournful take. Played over the closing credits of her upcoming film The Next Best Thing, this new version subs languid, electronic rhythms for McLean's jumpy ones, and makes its point in half the verses. It's pretty and rich with elegiac feeling, giving this old novelty tune all the pull of nostalgia.
