Lead Performance: The Baby Namboos

Like Finley Quaye, BN brain trust Mark Porter claims kinship with trip-hop auteur/A&R man Tricky (he's his cousin). But on this aimless debut, the ties are nothing to brag about. Leo Coleing's flat raps make Tricky sound like DMX, while Aurora Borealis' vocals evoke Patti Smith without her presence. Laid over lazy funk loops, the wan observations on class, race, and existentialism add up to little; only Dillinja's remix finale breaks this karma coma.
