BROKEDOWN PALACE (1999)
Credits
If anything, this drama proves that the Unwitting Yanks Trapped in Foreign Prisons genre is even more tired than Danes' So-Called rebellious shtick. To wit, it's strangely enjoyable to see her and Beckinsale busted on a bogus heroin-smuggling rap and thrown in the slammer with bad 'dos and no makeup (like a Road Rules mission gone awry) -- the girls are so annoyingly innocent that they kinda deserve to be incarcerated. So does the usually dependable Bill Pullman, who, as a Bangkok-based ambulance chaser, fails to help acquit the brokedown plot. REEL GOODIES (0:49) Rocker John Doe makes a heartfelt cameo appearance as Danes' poor trucker dad. THE LAST DETAIL Producer Adam Fields based this fictional tale on the plight of American women serving long drug-running sentences in Thai prisons.
