Hey, Kevin Garnett, you're the highest-paid NBA player, you've
scored a nifty Nike endorsement deal, and you stole a starting
spot from Karl Malone on the NBA All-Star team. What are you
going to do next? Produce a sitcom, of course. Garnett, Brad
Grey Television, and Hungry Man, the masterminds behind ESPN's
clever promos, are quietly developing a script for Fox that's
inspired by the real-life Garnett posse a crew of buddies he's
dubbed the Official Block Family, who live off the NBA superstar
in Minnesota (think The Monkees meets The Beverly Hillbillies).
The 23-year-old Timberwolves forward will likely not star in the
sitcom but will executive-produce and possibly introduce
episodes. It's unclear whether the concept will make it to air
this fall Fox has yet to order a pilot and BGTV doesn't want to
rush the project but industry types already see Garnett's
crossover potential. ''This guy assuming he keeps on doing what
he's doing is the next Michael Jordan,'' says BGTV president
Kevin Reilly. ''He's a superstar personality and a superstar
athlete.'' Yeah, but just wait for those superstar contract
negotiations.
