No Room at the Indie

Sundance vs. Slamdance--Are Robert Redford and the Sundance crew trying to outbid the rival film fest?

Is Robert Redford trying to squash Slamdance, the upstart rival to his Sundance Film Festival? A source at Park City, Utah's Treasure Mountain Inn, which has housed Slamdance since its 1995 debut, says that Redford's Sundance Institute has quietly offered more for the site than the alterna-fest paid this year. Redford's spokesman denies making the offer. But the cofounder of Slamdance — which launched The Daytrippers — is concerned: ''I hope [Sundance] supports all filmmakers,'' says Peter Baxter. ''But [even] if we do lose the location, we will return to Park City!''
