South vs. North

The search for a ''South Park'' theme song performer--Anne Murray declines, leaving producers scrambling for another Canadian singer

South Park fans have one more reason to blame Canada. The producers of this year's Oscar telecast have been searching for someone to interpret the 'toon's brilliant nominated song ''Blame Canada'' from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Who better than Canadian songstress Anne Murray to sing the tasteful line ''...that bitch Anne Murray...''? They asked — but the Nova Scotia native begged off, saying she had a golf tournament that day. No hard feelings, says Murray, a fan of the Maple Leaf-ragging tune. ''My kids have been playing it for months,'' she says. ''As a matter of fact, they thought that I was a bitch just this morning.'' All of which leaves producers scrambling for another crooning Canuck. ''First Celine Dion retires, now Anne Murray is unavailable,'' sighs the song's cowriter Marc Shaiman. ''Is it something we said?''
