Aimee Mann's song parade may have given Magnolia much of its sonic pageantry, but the emotional texture was also defined by composer-producer Jon Brion's bittersweet score. The strings-adorned music on Magnolia: Original Motion Picture Score celebrates the beauty and angst of the film with harmonically tart writing and tasteful if simple orchestration. And it plays nicely on its own extra-visual merits, too. B
